Lahore: According to a new study, daily consumption of sugary drinks may increase the risk of liver cancer. Researchers from multiple institutions examined approximately 90,504 women aged 50 to 70 over a span of nearly 19 years.
The study aimed to determine whether the consumption of sugary beverages such as fruit juices and sodas is linked to liver cancer. Scientists found that women who consumed sweetened drinks at least once daily had a 73% higher likelihood of developing liver cancer compared to those who drank such beverages less than once a month.
World Cancer Research Fund International ranks liver cancer as the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, while the American Cancer Society reports increasing rates of the disease and related deaths in the United States.
Previous studies have also suggested that habits involving other beverages can impact the risk of liver cancer differently, with alcohol consumption posing a higher risk and coffee consumption associated with lower risks.
The findings underscore the potential health risks associated with sugary drinks, urging further awareness and research into preventive measures against liver cancer.
