Concerns Grow Over Antibiotic Use in Broiler Chicken and Its Impact on Human Health

The use of antibiotics in broiler chicken farming has become a growing concern worldwide. While chicken meat is considered an important source of protein, experts warn that the antibiotics administered to poultry could pose risks to human health.

In broiler chicken production, antibiotics are commonly used to prevent diseases and speed up growth. However, these antibiotics can remain in the chicken’s body even after the animals are processed and reach consumers. Experts caution that the leftover antibiotics in meat might contribute to reduced antibiotic effectiveness in humans, especially when consumed frequently.

Nutritionist Zein Mughal highlighted that six different antibiotics are often used in poultry feed to promote rapid growth. However, excessive antibiotic use can lead to resistance, reducing the effectiveness of medications in humans over time. The most dangerous aspect, according to experts, is the antibiotics administered close to the time of sale, as they may not complete their treatment cycle before the chicken reaches the market.

Dr. Harmaat Ameer, a nutritionist, further explained that while chicken is a good source of protein, it also contains high levels of fats and calories, which can contribute to weight gain and other health issues like heart disease if consumed in excess.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has also raised alarms about the growing issue of antibiotic resistance. In countries like Pakistan, doctors often prescribe antibiotics excessively, sometimes for personal gain, exacerbating the problem. The WHO urges better control over antibiotic use to mitigate health risks globally.

Experts recommend that consumers adopt preventive measures, including thoroughly cooking chicken to reduce any potential risks from antibiotics or bacteria. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet and limiting excessive consumption of chicken is crucial for long-term health.

In conclusion, while broiler chicken provides essential nutrition, it is important to be mindful of the potential health risks associated with the antibiotics used in its production.
