Gandakha:Chairman Mir Imadad Khan Jamali of the Municipal Committee Gandakha has strongly criticized the unwarranted interference of the Sindh government, accusing it of attempting to turn Balochistan into a desert. In his recent statement, he expressed to media representatives that the Irrigation Department of Sindh and the Sindh government are deliberately withholding Balochistan’s share of water in the Kirthar Canal.
Chairman Jamali reiterated his earlier statements, highlighting the Sindh government’s inconsistency and excuses, ranging from weaknesses in barrage gates to claims of reduced water flow in Kirthar due to salt. He pointed out the irony that both Sindh and Balochistan are under the governance of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), yet Balochistan is consistently denied its rightful share of water, which raises serious questions about the PPP government’s intentions.
He accused the Sindh government of conspiring to push Balochistan towards drought conditions by constantly raising new issues in the Bilraj Canal and attempting to weaken the economy. Last year, former Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly Mir Jan Mohammad Jamali had met with Sindh’s Irrigation Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah to secure Balochistan’s water share. However, this time, the Sindh government and the Irrigation Department are reportedly hindering the cultivation in the sub-branches of Kirthar Canal that flow into Balochistan.
Chairman Jamali warned that if the Sindh government persists in this manner, it could severely affect the cultivation of Rabi crops. He appealed to the Supreme Court of Pakistan and government authorities to take immediate notice of the water shortage in Kirthar Canal in Balochistan and ensure that its share of water is provided from Sukkur Barrage. This, he emphasized, is essential for the cultivation of winter crops.
