Islamabad:In recent developments, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed has fled to India following intense anti-government protests, leading to the collapse of her government. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed, has now claimed that his mother did not formally resign before her departure.
In an interview with a British news agency, Sajeeb Wazed asserted that his mother did not officially submit her resignation as Prime Minister before leaving for India. He stated, “My mother intended to resign and was preparing to record her resignation statement. However, as protesters began advancing towards the Prime Minister’s residence, she was unable to record her statement or even gather her belongings.”
Wazed explained that due to the escalating situation, President Abdul Hamid dissolved the assembly and established a caretaker government without an official resignation from Hasina. According to him, Hasina Wazed remains the Prime Minister of Bangladesh from a constitutional perspective, and the President’s actions could potentially be challenged in court.
Wazed emphasized that, constitutionally, elections should be announced within the next three months. He assured that the Awami League, his mother’s party, will participate in the upcoming elections, and he remains confident about their return to power. However, if they do not win, he affirmed that they would continue to operate from the opposition.
Welcoming the statement from former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Wazed appreciated her call to move beyond revenge politics and focus on unity. He expressed a desire to work with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), advocating for the rejection of vindictive politics and collaboration, whether in an allied government or as a separate political entity.
In recent events in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina Wazed resigned and fled to India under severe pressure from student protests. Following her departure, the military took control of the country and announced a transitional government led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Army Chief General Wakar-ul-Zaman stated that the interim government will consist of 15 members, with the composition of the cabinet yet to be decided.
