In a dramatic political development in Bangladesh, caretaker minister Nayeem Islam has announced that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will face legal action for alleged involvement in the planning of mass killings. Islam stated that if Hasina returns to Bangladesh, she will be charged with the crime.
According to reports from Reuters, Nayeem Islam asserted, “Sheikh Hasina will face charges for planning the murder of civilians whenever she returns to Bangladesh.”
In response, Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, told Reuters that his mother intended to resign and make a public statement regarding her resignation. However, due to protests and demonstrators marching towards the Prime Minister’s residence, Hasina was unable to pack her belongings and formally step down.
Wazed emphasized that, according to the constitution, Sheikh Hasina remains the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Hasina had fled to India on August 5 after facing difficulties in suppressing a long march by protesters.
The situation remains tense as political and legal battles unfold in the country.
