Bangladeshi President Dissolves Parliament Amid Student Protest Demands
Dhaka: Bangladeshi President Mohammad Shahabuddin dissolved the Parliament following a meeting with military leaders. According to international news agencies, the decision came in response to a student-led movement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the dissolution of Parliament by 3 PM on August 6.
President Shahabuddin announced the dissolution just half an hour before the deadline, after consultations with the army chief and other military officials. The move has sparked celebrations among students on the streets.
Student leaders praised the President’s action and are now calling for Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus to be appointed as the Chief Advisor for the interim government. The demand for Parliament’s dissolution was initially made by student protest coordinator Nahid Islam in a recorded video message.
In the video, Nahid Islam had warned that if the President did not act by 3 PM on August 6, students would be compelled to resume protests. Earlier, Nahid Islam had also requested that Professor Muhammad Yunus be appointed as the Chief Advisor for the interim government.
This student movement led to the resignation of Sheikh Hasina, who departed for India after a 15-year tenure. Subsequently, the army chief announced the formation of an interim government.
