Quetta:During the fiscal year 2022-23, Balochistan faced financial mismanagement amounting to more than Rs. 26.54 billion, according to an audit conducted by the Auditor General of Pakistan. The audit report highlighted that the provincial government received revenues exceeding Rs. 491.93 billion but spent Rs. 503.94 billion, indicating expenditures exceeding revenues by Rs. 12 billion. Notably, the government allocated 74% of the development budget for departments including PHA, C&W, local government, and irrigation, while only 30% of the allocated funds for development projects were utilized.
The audit report further disclosed total financial irregularities amounting to Rs. 26.54 billion, including a case of fraud amounting to Rs. 72.9 million and various discrepancies. The report identified losses exceeding Rs. 1.48 billion in 12 cases of financial mismanagement. Moreover, irregularities involving tax evasion totaling Rs. 5.97 billion were flagged in 30 cases. The audit also pointed out expenditures totaling Rs. 12.326 billion incurred inappropriately due to non-adherence to proper procedures.
The Auditor General’s report underscores the urgent need for accountability and improved financial management practices within Balochistan to ensure transparency and efficient utilization of public funds.
