Islamabad: In a dramatic incident, unidentified assailants attacked a prisoner van transporting members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) involved in terrorism cases, reportedly in an attempt to facilitate their escape.
According to police spokespersons, the attack occurred near the Sangjani area, where multiple prisoners managed to flee during the chaos. The assault took place at the Sangjani toll plaza while the detainees were being transferred from Attock Jail for a court appearance.
Authorities confirmed that three prisoner vans were targeted, with attackers reportedly firing at the vehicles, shattering their windows. Law enforcement responded quickly, dispatching teams from the Tarnol and Sangjani police stations to the scene.
A search operation has been launched in the vicinity to locate the escaped prisoners, but as of now, none have been apprehended. Witnesses reported that between 25 to 30 attackers were involved in the assault, further complicating the situation.
This incident follows the arrest of 187 PTI members during protests at D-Chowk, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding the party amid legal challenges. Police are now questioning eyewitnesses as they work to investigate the attack.
