Army Chief General Asim Munir to Remain in Office Until 2027, Says Defence Minister Khawaja Asif
Islamabad: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has confirmed that Army Chief General Asim Munir will serve until 2027, following the approval of the amended Army Act. Speaking to a private TV channel after the passage of the bill, Asif stated that the amendment would benefit democratic governments in the future by eliminating the need for extensions in the tenure of army chiefs.
He explained that previously, several army chiefs had been granted extensions, a decision that required approval from Parliament. However, with the new legislation, the practice of extending the tenure of military leaders will no longer be an issue.
When asked about speculation regarding potential deals involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, Asif denied any such discussions, saying, “I have heard this from you, but there is nothing to it.”
In response to a question about former First Lady Bushra Bibi, Asif declined to comment, stating, “Wherever she is, I won’t make any remarks on that.”
Asif concluded by emphasizing that Pakistan’s future will change only when the country addresses its internal issues and works toward improvement.
