Amitabh Bachchan Declared ‘Clinically Dead’ After Horrific Injury on ‘Coolie’ Set

Mumbai, India:Bollywood’s megastar Amitabh Bachchan has revealed that he was declared ‘clinically dead’ after a terrifying accident on the set of the iconic film *Coolie* in 1982. The film, directed by Manmohan Desai and written by Kader Khan, was a major blockbuster, but it is now also remembered for the life-threatening injury Bachchan sustained during its production.
According to reports from Indian media, during the filming of a fight scene between Bachchan and actor Puneet Issar, a tragic accident occurred. Amitabh, while attempting a jump, collided with the corner of a table, leading to severe internal injuries. He was rushed to the hospital, but his condition rapidly deteriorated. Doctors informed his family that his blood pressure had dropped to nearly zero, and his heart had stopped beating, leading them to declare him clinically dead.
In an interview with host Samir Grewal, Amitabh Bachchan recalled the incident, stating, “I was in a coma. My intestines had ruptured, and immediate surgery was performed. Five days later, I was brought to Mumbai for another surgery. At that point, the doctors declared me clinically dead. My breathing had stopped, and my blood pressure was almost zero.”
Bachchan’s wife, Jaya Bachchan, also shared her recollection of the horrifying moment in an interview. She said, “When I arrived at the hospital, my brother-in-law informed me that the doctors had declared Amitabh clinically dead. I couldn’t believe it. The doctors said only your prayers can help now. They were administering injections when I felt movement in his feet. I screamed, and his breathing resumed.”
Despite surviving the accident, Amitabh Bachchan had to undergo several surgeries and reportedly lost about 75% of his physical strength. At the time of the incident, his son, Abhishek Bachchan, was only six years old. The horrific event became a defining moment in Bachchan’s life and career, highlighting his strength and resilience in the face of adversity.
