Ahmed Shehzad Criticizes Pakistan Cricket’s Merit System and Champions Trophy Performance

Ahmed Shehzad, a former cricketer who has earned recognition throughout his career and now works as an analyst while running his own foundation, has openly criticized the current state of Pakistan’s cricket team. He is particularly frustrated by the national team’s poor performance in the Champions Trophy and has expressed his anger regarding the team’s lackluster showing.

Speaking on the matter, Shehzad pointed out the deep-rooted issues within Pakistan cricket, specifically highlighting the significant lack of merit at all levels of the game. “Cricket didn’t deteriorate overnight,” he stated, adding that those in power, who have held their positions for years, are responsible for the stagnation. “As soon as someone genuinely tries to bring about change, this autocratic group stands against them. The result is a lack of improvement across departments, leading to disastrous outcomes,” he said.

Shehzad emphasized that the solution lies in appointing competent coaches based on merit. He argued that if qualified coaches are not available locally, international experts should be brought in. However, those in power are reluctant to do so, preferring to maintain control of the situation. “You need to place the right people in the right positions at the right time, not just hire your friends. This compromises merit,” he added.

He also criticized the tendency in Pakistan to fill positions with individuals who will garner media attention, rather than focusing on the actual responsibilities of the job. “In Pakistan, it’s about keeping everyone happy, so that the media focuses on them, leaving the real culprits untouched.”

Shehzad’s candid remarks shed light on the challenges facing Pakistan cricket, urging a shift towards a merit-based system to ensure long-term success.
