Adiala Jail Rejects Solitary Confinement Claims as Imran Khan Completes Three Years in Custody
LAHORE: As former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan completed three years in jail, the Superintendent of Adiala Jail has submitted a report rejecting allegations that he is being held in solitary confinement or subjected to discriminatory treatment.
The report, filed in connection with a petition pending before the Supreme Court, states that solitary confinement is no longer a common practice in Pakistan’s prisons and that no inmate at Adiala Jail, including Imran Khan, is being held under such conditions.
According to the report, Imran Khan is serving his sentence in accordance with the law and is being treated like other prisoners. However, due to his status as a better-class prisoner, as well as his position as a former prime minister and political leader, he has been provided certain additional facilities and enhanced security arrangements.
The jail authorities said Imran Khan resides in a seven-cell compound, where he is free to move throughout the day and is only required to remain inside his cell during designated nighttime lock-up hours. Ordinary inmates are not allowed access to his accommodation due to security considerations.
The report further states that the Deputy Superintendent meets Imran Khan regularly and conducts additional visits whenever necessary. A prison doctor reportedly examines him three times a day, checking his blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and other vital signs. Additional medical examinations are conducted whenever required.
According to the report, a full-time convicted inmate has been assigned to prepare Imran Khan’s meals based on his chosen menu. The former premier is also provided with natural light, fresh air, and the opportunity to exercise from sunrise to sunset.
Jail officials said Imran Khan is free to engage in activities of his choice during daytime hours, while his privacy is maintained in accordance with prison rules. They added that his accommodation remains under constant security monitoring, with adequate prison staff deployed at the site.
The superintendent also stated that Imran Khan is allowed to meet his wife, Bushra Bibi, every Tuesday in accordance with prison regulations and is regularly provided with newspapers and books of his choice.
The report noted that Salman Safdar, acting as a court-appointed friend of the court, inspected Imran Khan’s cell on February 10, 2026, and later submitted a report to the Supreme Court, concluding that the former prime minister’s detention conditions were satisfactory and did not constitute solitary confinement.
The jail authorities described allegations made by Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, regarding solitary confinement as speculative and without merit, requesting the court to dismiss the petition.
The petition is scheduled to be heard by Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro.
