Yami Gautam Reveals She Once Decided to Quit Bollywood and Return to Himachal Pradesh

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Yami Gautam has revealed that there was a time when she seriously considered leaving the film industry and returning to her hometown in Himachal Pradesh due to a lack of acting opportunities.

In a recent interview, the 37-year-old actress reflected on the difficult phase of her career, saying that despite making a successful debut with Vicky Donor in 2012, she struggled for years to secure meaningful roles.

Yami said the repeated disappointments made her decide to quit acting and start a new life in Himachal Pradesh, where she planned to work on her family’s agricultural land.

She recalled that everything changed when she was offered a role opposite Vicky Kaushal in the 2019 war film Uri: The Surgical Strike, which gave her career a new direction and restored her confidence about a future in Bollywood.

According to Yami, despite the success of Vicky Donor, she was labeled as an unconventional actress, limiting the opportunities that came her way.

She said that before the success of Uri and Bala, she had almost finalized her decision to leave the industry. Her parents, she added, always supported her and simply told her she could return home whenever she wanted.

Yami described it as an interesting coincidence that just when she decided to walk away from Bollywood, her career took a dramatic turn. The success of Uri was followed by Bala, transforming her professional journey almost overnight.

Speaking about the challenges of being an outsider in the film industry, Yami said the biggest hurdle was not being an outsider itself but having to prove herself repeatedly. She noted that star kids often receive multiple opportunities even after failures, while outsiders may spend years fighting for a single chance.

She added that she often wondered how much more she could have achieved if she had been given the same number of opportunities. However, she believes the industry is changing, as audiences today care less about an actor’s background and more about talent, strong performances, and quality films, giving her renewed hope for the future.
