Lahore: Federal Minister for Industries and Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, has announced that 100 top-performing students will receive free electric bikes to promote eco-friendly transportation and support education. The announcement was made during his participation in the Electric Bike Exhibition organized by the Engineering Development Board, where various models were showcased.
Speaking at the event, Rana Tanveer highlighted Pakistan’s progress in electric vehicle (EV) development, noting that the country is now not only capable of exporting three-wheelers but is also making significant strides in the electric vehicle sector. The government has allocated 4 billion rupees for the promotion of this industry, and two companies have been granted licenses to manufacture electric vehicles in Pakistan. Additionally, 31 companies have expressed interest in setting up electric vehicle production in the country.
The Minister revealed that 100 students, recognized for their excellent performance, would be given electric bikes to encourage them to use eco-friendly transportation options. He emphasized that this initiative is part of the broader effort to make electric vehicles more accessible to the public.
Rana Tanveer also reminded the audience that this is the second electric vehicle policy under their government. The first policy, introduced earlier, has already provided employment and various benefits to millions of people. The Punjab government is also working on initiatives for electric two- and three-wheeled vehicles.
The Federal Minister further mentioned that the Punjab government is offering subsidies to make electric bikes affordable for the public, and a new electric vehicle policy will be released by November 30. This policy aims to boost the adoption of green technology across the country. Private companies have already started manufacturing electric vehicles and bikes in Pakistan.
Addressing concerns about the lack of charging infrastructure, Rana Tanveer shared that, in line with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision, the government plans to establish 10,000 electric vehicle charging stations by 2030. This initiative is expected to reduce the country’s reliance on fuel imports and significantly lower carbon emissions.
