Chinese Man Who Faked His Death to Escape Prison Arrested After Elaborate Hoax Unravels

Beijing: Police in China’s Hunan Province have revealed details of an unusual case in which a man allegedly faked his own death in an attempt to avoid a prison sentence, only to be arrested after investigators uncovered the deception.

According to police, the man, identified only by the surname Xi, was stopped for drunk driving. Authorities discovered that he had previously been caught twice for driving under the influence without a valid driver’s license. Facing the likelihood of imprisonment after his third offense, he allegedly devised an elaborate plan to escape punishment.

While released on bail, Xi reportedly persuaded his family to help stage his death. The family purchased a coffin in advance, scattered empty medicine bottles around the house, and used cooling equipment to lower his body temperature in an effort to make it appear that he had died from a drug overdose.

During the funeral, Xi’s mother and grandmother kept his face covered with a cloth, claiming it had been disfigured by the effects of the medication. On the day the fake death was staged, he was supposedly buried in haste. However, investigators later found that he had secretly fled to another province while the coffin was being lowered into the grave.

Police became suspicious after discovering several inconsistencies. The coffin had been purchased before the alleged death, no ambulance or police had been called, no official death certificate had been issued, and there was no government record of the burial or cremation. Neighbors’ suspicions and security camera footage further confirmed that the man was still alive.

Authorities later arrested Xi, and a court sentenced him to five months in prison and fined him 20,000 yuan. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against his mother and grandmother for allegedly helping conceal the crime and misleading investigators.
