Indian Rupee Falls to Historic Low Against U.S. Dollar

New Delhi: The Indian rupee has fallen to its lowest level on record, crossing the 97-per-U.S. dollar mark for the first time amid mounting pressure from rising global crude oil prices.

According to reports, one U.S. dollar is now trading at 97 Indian rupees, marking a historic low for the Indian currency. The rupee had previously touched its then-record low of 96.96 against the dollar in May 2026.

Market analysts have attributed the latest decline primarily to rising crude oil prices, which have increased demand for U.S. dollars in India, one of the world’s largest oil importers. Higher import costs have placed additional pressure on the country’s currency in recent weeks.

The depreciation of the rupee has raised concerns over the potential impact on inflation and import bills, particularly for petroleum products and other essential commodities that are heavily dependent on foreign exchange markets.

According to the news agency report, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) intervened in the foreign exchange market in an effort to support the rupee and curb excessive volatility.

Despite the central bank’s intervention, the Indian currency remained under pressure, reflecting broader challenges posed by global economic conditions and elevated energy prices. Economists will be closely watching the RBI’s future policy measures and international market trends to assess the rupee’s trajectory in the coming months.
