Nawaz Sharif Criticizes Opponents’ Development Efforts, Highlights Achievements of His Tenure

LONDON: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has criticized the current government’s lack of development initiatives, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, during a conversation with Pakistan Muslim League (N) workers in New York. He emphasized that his administration had allocated between 40 to 50 billion rupees to provide relief to the people of Punjab regarding electricity bills.
Sharif questioned his opponents about what they have done for public welfare in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he noted they have been in power for over a decade. He expressed disappointment over the deterioration of public morals and the rise of a culture of disrespect during their tenure.
Reflecting on his time in office, Sharif highlighted that when he was Prime Minister, the dollar was valued at only 104 rupees, with interest rates at a mere 5.5%. He stated that Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves were at an all-time high and that his government had successfully moved away from reliance on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
He criticized the current government for increasing the dollar’s value and raising interest rates to 22-23%. Sharif lamented that Pakistan’s foreign reserves have plummeted and accused the current leadership of damaging international relations and failing to launch any significant development projects.
Sharif urged his opponents, specifically Imran Khan, to present a concrete development project that they have initiated for the nation’s progress. He pointed out that the motorway network, initiated and completed under his leadership, stands as a testament to his commitment to infrastructure development, including major routes connecting various provinces.
He concluded by reminding attendees of the extensive road and highway networks built during his administration, including the notable tunnel at Attabad Lake, and urged for continued progress in the transportation sector.
