Floodwaters Damage Bridge Near Muridke After Breach in Upper Chenab Canal

Muridke: A bridge connecting several villages near Joiyanwala, Muridke, was washed away after a breach occurred in the Upper Chenab Canal following a sharp rise in water levels, local authorities said.

According to reports, heavy rainfall in India led to increased water flows into transboundary waterways, resulting in a surge of water entering Pakistan’s seasonal channels. The overflowing water caused the embankment of the Upper Chenab Canal near Joiyanwala to collapse, disrupting access to several nearby villages.

The situation also worsened in the Dek Nullah and the MR Link Canal, where rising water levels caused flooding beyond the banks, creating panic among residents and raising concerns for surrounding agricultural land.

The district administration has imposed Section 144 as a precautionary measure and activated emergency response arrangements. Heavy machinery has been deployed to the breach site to repair the damaged embankment, while rescue and protective measures are underway to prevent further damage.
