Pakistan to Establish Digital Authority as Central Data Regulator Under New Governance Policy

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology has decided to designate the Pakistan Digital Authority as the country’s central data regulatory body under a proposed national data governance framework.

According to official documents, the Pakistan Digital Authority will oversee data governance across all federal government institutions. Under the new framework, every federal agency will be required to comply with the National Data Governance Framework to ensure standardized data management and governance practices.

The proposed National Data Governance Policy 2026 grants the authority broad regulatory powers to develop and enforce national data governance standards.

As part of its expanded mandate, the Pakistan Digital Authority will supervise the National Open Data Portal and the National Data Exchange Platform, aiming to improve data sharing, interoperability, transparency, and digital governance across the public sector.

The initiative is intended to strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and establish a unified framework for the secure and efficient management of government data.
