Lahore High Court Schedules Hearing on 27th Constitutional Amendment

Lahore: The Lahore High Court has scheduled the hearing of petitions challenging the 27th Constitutional Amendment. A three-member full bench will preside over the case.
Chief Justice of Lahore High Court, Aalia Neelum, has constituted a three-member bench headed by Justice Sadaqat Ali Khan. The bench also includes Justice Jawad Hassan and Justice Sultan Tanveer. The hearing is set for **December 5**.
The petitions have named the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the National Assembly as respondents through their respective secretaries. The petitioners argue that the amendment effectively strips the Supreme Court of its original powers, transforming it into a federal constitutional court. They claim this undermines the court’s authority and poses a threat to judicial independence.
The petitions further assert that the amendment violates Islamic provisions, judicial autonomy, and fundamental rights. They argue that it was enacted without consultation with the provinces and without seeking input from lawyers, civil society, journalists, and other stakeholders, thereby affecting the constitutional framework.
The petitioners have requested the Lahore High Court to declare the 27th Constitutional Amendment null and void and to suspend its implementation until a final decision is made.
