Excessive Short Video Watching on Smartphones Linked to Negative Effects on the Brain: Study

Watching short videos on social media has become a popular way to pass the time, with many people scrolling through endless videos on their phones throughout the day. However, this habit could be harmful to your health, especially to your brain, according to a new study conducted in China.
A study by Tianjin Normal University found that spending excessive time scrolling through smartphones can negatively impact brain functions, including the ability to focus. The research included 111 individuals aged 17 to 30, all of whom enjoyed watching short videos on their phones. They were instructed to watch videos for an average of 95 minutes daily for two months, while their brain activities were tracked through MRI scans.
The results were startling. Researchers discovered significant addictive effects on the brain regions responsible for decision-making and emotional control. Additionally, parts of the brain related to attention and self-comparison were also affected, making it harder for individuals to focus on tasks. The study also observed changes in 500 genes related to addiction and brain alterations.
Researchers pointed out that excessive phone scrolling not only disrupts the ability to concentrate but also negatively impacts sleep quality, increasing the risk of insomnia. They explained that many people turn to short videos as a way to escape the harsh realities of life, which ultimately leads to negative effects on the brain.
The researchers advised that while it’s fine to watch short videos, it’s important to keep the viewing duration short or exercise caution to avoid the harmful impacts of excessive screen time.
