Gwadar Port to Play Key Role in Pakistan’s Trade Strategy: Cabinet Committee Meeting
Quetta/IslamabadضA Cabinet Committee meeting, chaired by Federal Minister for Commerce *Jam Kamal Khan*, was held to discuss the strategy and potential of utilizing *Gwadar Port* for importing essential goods such as wheat, fertilizer, and sugar. The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including *Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs* *Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh*, along with senior officials from the Ministries of Commerce, Maritime Affairs, Interior, and Planning.
The primary objective of the meeting was to devise a strategic plan to promote the use of *Gwadar Port* and to explore ways to increase its role in Pakistan’s trade infrastructure. The committee, which has been tasked with presenting actionable recommendations to the Prime Minister, reviewed the progress of ongoing projects and discussed a roadmap to enhance the use of Gwadar Port. It was decided that the committee would hold monthly meetings and provide quarterly reports to the Cabinet to assess the development of Gwadar as a key commercial hub.
The committee emphasized using *Gwadar Port* for bulk imports such as wheat, sugar, and urea, highlighting its strategic importance for the national economy. *Minister Jam Kamal Khan* proposed the creation of a comprehensive strategy under a unified vision to integrate Gwadar into the national trade system. He stressed the need to create a conducive business environment and to take immediate actions through the *Pakistan Trading Corporation (TCP)* to leverage the opportunities for government-sector imports.
The meeting also reviewed the potential for containerized imports and exports through Gwadar, with members urging the government to offer necessary incentives to link private sector businesses with Gwadar Port. A proposal to set up a separate working group to involve the private sector was discussed, along with an analysis of the port’s potential for transshipment and transit for *Afghanistan* and *Central Asian Republics (CARs)*.
The committee appreciated the progress of ongoing transshipment projects and acknowledged China’s interest in utilizing *Gwadar Port* under the *“One Belt, One Road” (OBOR)* framework. Additionally, the committee highlighted the need to reduce the cost differential between *Karachi* and *Gwadar*, particularly for government-to-government (G2G) agreements, such as the one with *Bangladesh*. Financial support systems for these efforts were also discussed.
To further facilitate business at Gwadar Port, the committee sought detailed responses from various ministries and departments regarding pending issues. It also called for enhanced collaboration with logistical experts from sectoral councils to improve the business environment at the port.
The committee also deliberated on measures to boost bulk cargo at Gwadar Port, with a working paper to be presented at the next meeting. The paper will cover aspects such as road and rail connectivity, insurance facilities, and security arrangements.
In conclusion, the Cabinet Committee reaffirmed its commitment to making *Gwadar Port* the cornerstone of Pakistan’s trade and logistics system.
