Kuwait Revokes Citizenship of Over 3,000 Individuals Amid Fraud and Other Allegations
Kuwait City: The Kuwaiti government has revoked the citizenship of 3,043 individuals in its latest move to crack down on fraud, deception, and other allegations. According to a report by Gulf News, the Citizenship Verification Committee in Kuwait announced the decision on Thursday, citing various reasons, including fraudulent activities, for the revocation of these individuals’ Kuwaiti citizenship.
Among those affected, 2,863 people hold dual citizenship and hail from 54 different countries. The decision will now be sent to Kuwait’s Cabinet for final approval. Recently, the newly established committee has been reviewing cases of citizenship revocation, with over 12,000 cases recorded since August.
In the past three and a half months, the Kuwaiti government has stripped more than 9,000 individuals of their citizenship following the proven allegations.
Kuwait’s Deputy Prime Minister, Defense Minister, and Interior Minister, Sheikh Fahad Al-Youssef, clarified that women married to Kuwaiti men, as well as Kuwaiti men’s divorced or widowed spouses, will not be affected by these revocations. These women will retain their employment and salaries, with pension benefits continuing if they have already retired.
Since early March, Kuwait has been revoking the citizenship of thousands of people due to fraud or dual nationality, as the country strictly forbids holding multiple citizenships. The Ministry of Interior has set up a hotline for the public to report individuals who may have acquired Kuwaiti citizenship through fraudulent means or by holding dual nationality. Those who provide relevant information will remain anonymous.
Following reports of fraudulent citizenship acquisitions, Kuwaiti authorities have filed cases against several individuals, resulting in criminal charges and imprisonments.
