Rana Sanaullah Says Government-Opposition Talks Face Hurdles

ISLAMABAD:Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah has said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has already written to National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, but the opposition leader is now seeking to hold the meeting at a location other than the Prime Minister House.

Speaking during a private television programme, Rana Sanaullah said the Prime Minister House was not anyone’s personal property but a state office, questioning the opposition’s reluctance to visit the venue. He added that he had also received information that a meeting could take place at another location.

Rana Sanaullah further claimed that a PTI leader had said he had consulted an *istikhara* and believed it was not appropriate to go to the Prime Minister House.

According to the prime minister’s adviser, the opposition was either unwilling or under pressure to avoid negotiations and efforts to resolve political issues.

Rana Sanaullah also spoke about his meeting with Mahmood Khan Achakzai, saying he respected the opposition leader and appreciated his support during difficult times.

He claimed that individuals meeting the government on behalf of PTI had requested that their names not be disclosed, fearing criticism, insults and abusive comments on social media.

Rana Sanaullah also said that there were people within PTI who did not want tensions to escalate ahead of September 27.

The remarks come amid ongoing contacts between the government and opposition. Recent reports indicate that government representatives and opposition leaders have held meetings and agreed to continue discussions on political and constitutional matters.
