Government Allows Export of Expensive Imported Sugar at Lower Price

LAHORE:Pakistan’s Ministry of Industries and Production has allowed the export of imported sugar at a lower price, a decision that sources say could cause billions of rupees in losses to the national exchequer.
According to sources within the ministry, a decision could not be reached on exporting 250,000 tonnes of cheaper locally produced sugar.
Sources described the decision to export only 100,000 tonnes of sugar as disappointing, saying it could create further difficulties for the sugar industry.
They said sugar mills may face problems purchasing sugarcane from farmers, while mill owners had already warned the Ministry of Industries and Production about the potential consequences.
The development has raised concerns over the economic impact of exporting imported sugar at a lower price while cheaper locally produced sugar remains unavailable for export.
