Pakistan Decides to Export 108,000 Tonnes of Imported Sugar

ISLAMABAD:The government has decided to export 108,000 metric tonnes of sugar from the stock imported into Pakistan.

Speaking on Geo News programme *Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath*, Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain said the export of sugar would not lead to an increase in prices in the domestic market.

He said the country currently has sufficient sugar stocks and that the government wants to export part of the stock because global sugar prices have improved, allowing it to be sold at a better price.

Meanwhile, Awam Pakistan Party leader Miftah Ismail strongly criticized the government’s sugar policy.

Ismail said sugar was initially exported, creating an artificial shortage in the domestic market, after which excessive quantities were imported. He criticized the decision to now export the imported sugar, arguing that the resulting losses were ultimately being borne by ordinary citizens.
