Trump Rebukes CNN Reporter Kristin Holmes After Tough Question, Sparking Media Backlash

WASHINGTON:US President Donald Trump sharply criticized CNN senior reporter Kristin Holmes after she asked him a challenging question about comments made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff, triggering a new confrontation between the president and the media.
According to international media reports, Holmes asked Trump to respond to recent remarks by Ossoff, who had criticized the president in a speech and accused him of focusing more on building a ballroom at the White House and traveling with his close aide Natalie Harp than on carrying out his presidential duties.
Holmes specifically asked Trump about the senator’s remarks, which also referred to Harp.
Instead of directly answering the question, Trump attacked Ossoff, comparing the senator’s appearance to comedian Pee-wee Herman. The exchange then turned toward Holmes when she attempted to ask a follow-up question.
Trump repeatedly told the reporter to be quiet and accused her of being rude.
When Holmes identified herself as being from CNN, Trump responded by calling CNN “fake news” and described Holmes as a loud and “fake” reporter.
US media reports said Trump repeatedly interrupted Holmes and prevented her from completing her questions.
The confrontation occurred while Trump was attending an event where he was discussing several issues, including his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the decision to reduce US military exercises with South Korea.
### White House Draws Reporter’s Children Into Dispute
The controversy did not end with the heated exchange in the Oval Office.
The White House rapid-response social media account directly targeted Holmes, describing her question as “disgusting” and “inhumane” and attempting to portray her as an embarrassment to her profession.
In another post, the White House referred to Holmes’ children, saying that one day they would see their mother’s question and be ashamed of it.
The personal attack triggered further criticism in the US media, particularly because the reporter’s family was brought into a dispute arising from a journalistic question and political disagreement.
### CNN Defends Kristin Holmes
CNN defended its reporter, describing Holmes as one of its highly experienced and respected journalists covering the White House.
The network said Holmes had asked the president a difficult, relevant and important question.
CNN said government officials have the right to disagree with reporting or questions they dislike, but personally attacking journalists for asking questions is inappropriate for the presidency and inconsistent with the principles of a free press.
Other CNN journalists also came to Holmes’ defense. One colleague described her as an excellent reporter, an excellent person and, above all, a mother, while questioning why a journalist should face such treatment simply for asking the president to respond to a Democratic senator’s remarks.
### Who Is Natalie Harp?
At the center of the dispute is Natalie Harp, a White House executive assistant who is considered part of Trump’s close circle.
In a speech on Sunday, Senator Jon Ossoff criticized Trump and referred to Harp while accusing the president of being more interested in personal comforts and travel than in carrying out his presidential responsibilities.
Ossoff also referred to an aircraft provided by the Emir of Qatar.
The White House responded angrily to Ossoff’s remarks. White House Communications Director Steven Cheung also used highly insulting language while attacking the senator.
Trump has previously clashed with female journalists who have asked him difficult questions. CNN journalist Clarissa Ward has also faced personal criticism from the White House on social media.
The latest confrontation has renewed debate in the United States over the relationship between the Trump administration and the press, as well as the boundaries of presidential criticism of journalists.
