Iran Reached US Understanding With Dignity and Strength, Says Pezeshkian

TEHRAN:Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Iran reached a memorandum of understanding with the United States with dignity, confidence and strength, while keeping in view the principles laid down by former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Pezeshkian said Iran had moved the recent agreement with Washington forward from a position of strength and had not surrendered to pressure from its adversaries.

He said the memorandum was prepared after detailed discussions with experts and was based on Iran’s national interests and principles.

The development comes as the 60-day period set under the June 17 US-Iran memorandum reaches its scheduled deadline on August 17. Reports say the agreement was signed following Pakistan-mediated diplomatic efforts aimed at ending hostilities and establishing a framework for a broader settlement. ([UA News][1])

According to reports, Pakistan played a key mediating role in bringing Washington and Tehran to the negotiating table. Pakistani sources have also said that both sides had agreed in principle to extend the ceasefire, although the duration of any extension remained under discussion. ([aa.com.tr][2])

Pezeshkian’s remarks underline Tehran’s position that any understanding with Washington must be pursued on the basis of national sovereignty, dignity and strength rather than through external pressure.
