Pakistan’s Federal Debt Rises by Rs18.83 Trillion in 28 Months

ISLAMABAD:Pakistan’s federal government debt increased by **Rs18.83 trillion** during the first 28 months of the current period, according to State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) data.
SBP documents show that between March 2024 and June 2026, the federal government’s domestic debt rose by **Rs16.77 trillion**, while its external debt increased by **Rs2.07 trillion**.
The increase translates into an average rise of more than **Rs22.4 billion per day** over the 28-month period.
According to the documents, the federal government’s total debt stood at **Rs64.81 trillion** by February 2024, the final month of the caretaker government. After an increase of Rs18.83 trillion over the following 28 months, the debt reached **Rs83.64 trillion** by June 2026.
SBP data shows that the central government’s domestic debt increased from **Rs42.68 trillion** in February 2024 to **Rs59.44 trillion** by June 2026.
Meanwhile, the federal government’s external debt rose from **Rs22.13 trillion** in February 2024 to **Rs24.20 trillion** by June 2026.
The figures highlight a significant increase in the government’s debt burden over the 28-month period, with domestic borrowing accounting for the bulk of the overall rise.
