JSMU Issues Separate Notifications on Dr Nighat Shah’s Retirement and Three-Year Contract
KARACHI:Jinnah Sindh Medical University (JSMU) has issued two separate notifications regarding the retirement and subsequent contractual appointment of Professor Dr Nighat Shah, daughter of former Sindh chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah.
According to the university, Dr Nighat Shah will continue serving as Professor of Gynaecology (BPS-21) at JSMU for three years on a contract immediately after her retirement from government service.
The university issued separate notifications confirming her retirement and her appointment on a three-year contract, effective from the day after her retirement.
According to the retirement notification issued by JSMU Registrar Dr Azam Khan, Professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Pro Vice Chancellor Dr Nighat Shah retired from government service at noon on August 12, 2026.
The notification also referred to her appointment as Pro Vice Chancellor on October 6, 2025, under which her tenure was linked to her period of government service.
However, a second notification stated that, following a decision by the Sindh government and approval from the competent authority, the university’s Syndicate, Dr Nighat Shah had been permitted to continue serving as Professor of Gynaecology (BPS-21) on a three-year contract.
The new contract will take effect from August 13, 2026, immediately after her retirement on August 12.
Dr Nighat Shah was appointed Pro Vice Chancellor of JSMU in October 2025, with her appointment initially set to continue until her retirement.
Accordingly, the university’s two notifications show that Dr Nighat Shah formally retired from government service on August 12 but resumed duties at the same university from August 13 under a three-year contractual appointment, without any break in service.
