Access to Al Jazeera Website Reportedly Restricted in Pakistan, Users Turn to VPNs

Lahore: Users across Pakistan have reported that the Al Jazeera news website has become inaccessible on several internet and mobile networks without the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN), raising concerns about a possible restriction on access.

According to users, the website does not load through regular broadband or mobile internet connections but becomes accessible immediately when a VPN is used. The reports have led to speculation that access to the website may have been filtered or blocked through local internet service providers or a centralized filtering system.

The Al Jazeera website remains accessible in other countries, indicating that the issue does not appear to be caused by a global server outage or technical fault.

Some international media outlets have claimed that the reported restriction followed Al Jazeera’s recent coverage of protests, internet disruptions, and the political situation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir. However, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), PEMRA, the Ministry of Information, and the Government of Pakistan have not issued any official statement or order confirming that the website has been blocked.

Reports have also suggested that any restriction on a major international news platform could have diplomatic implications, given the close ties between Pakistan and Qatar, where Al Jazeera is based. Qatar is an important economic partner of Pakistan, providing investment, LNG supplies, and employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of Pakistani workers.

As of now, no official explanation has been provided regarding the reported inaccessibility of the Al Jazeera website in Pakistan.
