Electricity Prices May Increase by Up to Rs1.20 Per Unit in August Bills
KARACHI: Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, may face higher power bills in August as an increase of up to Rs1.20 per unit has been proposed for one month under the monthly Fuel Charges Adjustment (FCA) mechanism.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has submitted a petition to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) seeking an increase in electricity tariffs based on fuel cost adjustments for the month of June. The final decision will be made by NEPRA after conducting a public hearing on the matter.
If approved, consumers will have to pay the additional charges in their August electricity bills.
According to the CPPA’s submission, hydropower accounted for 39 percent of electricity generation during June. Power generated from local coal contributed 10.11 percent, while imported coal accounted for 12.65 percent of the total electricity mix.
The report further stated that 11.02 percent of electricity was generated using imported gas, whereas nuclear power contributed 13.40 percent during the same period.
The proposed increase has been sought after taking into account the cost of electricity generation and other relevant factors associated with the fuel cost adjustment mechanism.
Should NEPRA approve the petition in full, electricity consumers would bear an additional burden of up to Rs1.20 per unit for one month, which is likely to be reflected in August’s electricity bills.
The potential increase could affect consumers across the country, including those served by K-Electric in Karachi. However, the exact applicability and amount of the adjustment will only become clear after NEPRA announces its final decision.
