SBCA Identifies 741 Dangerous Buildings Across Sindh, Majority Located in Karachi

KARACHI: The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) has disclosed that 741 buildings across Sindh have been declared structurally dangerous, with the majority located in Karachi.

The revelation was made during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Sindh Assembly, chaired by Nisar Khuhro in Karachi.

According to an official statement issued after the meeting, the SBCA informed the committee that 588 dangerous buildings, including 444 heritage structures, are situated in Karachi alone.

The authority further stated that approval has been granted to evacuate 59 dangerous buildings, while permission has been issued for the demolition of 39 structures deemed highly hazardous.

The Public Accounts Committee also summoned the Heritage Committee to appear before its next meeting and sought a report on buildings allegedly constructed in violation of regulations around the Mazar-e-Quaid precincts.

In addition, the committee directed authorities to discourage public investment in 58 illegal housing schemes operating in Karachi and ordered legal action against those responsible for running them.

The PAC further instructed officials to identify and publicly disclose the names of individuals involved in the illegal housing schemes, underscoring the need for greater accountability and enforcement of building and housing regulations in the province.

The meeting highlighted growing concerns over public safety, urban planning, and the preservation of Karachi’s architectural heritage amid the increasing number of structurally unsafe buildings.
