Balochistan Food Authority Fines 69 Food Outlets, Destroys Unsafe Vegetables Grown with Sewage Water
Quetta: The Balochistan Food Authority (BFA) has intensified its province-wide campaign against food safety violations, imposing fines on 69 food businesses, issuing more than 100 improvement notices, and destroying 27 acres of vegetables irrigated with sewage water in Quetta.
According to a BFA spokesperson, inspection teams carried out enforcement operations in Quetta, Dalbandin, Panjgur, Sohbatpur, Loralai, Zhob, Khuzdar, and Hub. The inspections covered bakeries, milk shops, grocery stores, restaurants, naan shops, spice shops, and other food establishments.
During the operations, officials confiscated and destroyed large quantities of expired, banned, and substandard food products to prevent them from reaching consumers.
In Quetta, food safety teams conducted inspections in areas including Nawan Killi, Airport Road, Alamdar Road, Pashtoonabad, Joint Road, and Arbab Karam Khan Road, taking legal action against businesses found violating food safety regulations.
The BFA also seized bottled water stock from a water purification plant on Alamdar Road after inspectors allegedly found inconsistencies in manufacturing and expiry dates on bottle caps and labels, the absence of laboratory analysis reports, and the marketing of bottled water under the names of various hotels and institutions. The food business operator has been summoned for further legal proceedings.
Separately, the authority continued its special crackdown on vegetables cultivated with sewage water. During the latest operation in Killi Ramzan, Quetta, officials destroyed approximately 27 acres of green onions, coriander, mint, and spinach grown using sewage water. Authorities also blocked sewage channels to prevent further illegal cultivation.
The BFA said that more than 600 acres of vegetables grown with sewage water have been destroyed under its ongoing province-wide campaign, with further enforcement operations continuing in different areas.
Director General of the Balochistan Food Authority said the authority is intensifying its actions against those involved in the production and sale of unsafe food. He reaffirmed that vegetables irrigated with sewage water would not be allowed to reach consumers and that strict legal action against violators will continue to ensure the availability of safe and quality food for the public.
