Annu Kapoor Rejects Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Last Superstar’ Claim
Mumbai: Veteran Bollywood actor Annu Kapoor has disagreed with Shah Rukh Khan’s statement that he is the “last superstar” of the Indian film industry, saying that fame and popularity are never permanent.
In a recent interview, Annu Kapoor, without directly naming Shah Rukh Khan, compared his career trajectory with that of legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan and emphasized that maintaining popularity over several decades is the true test of superstardom.
He said that the actor being referred to began his career around 1992 and has spent approximately 34 years in the industry. Kapoor pointed out that even if 34 years are subtracted from Amitabh Bachchan’s 53-year-long career, 19 years still remain.
“Do you think that actor will remain equally popular for another 19 years? Will he still be as relevant in 2045? I don’t think so,” Kapoor remarked.
His comments came in response to Shah Rukh Khan’s statement made during actor Anupam Kher’s talk show, where the Bollywood superstar said, “It will never happen again. I say this with humility, but the truth is that I am the last superstar.”
The statement sparked discussions among fans and industry observers regarding the changing nature of stardom in contemporary cinema.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming film King, which is expected to hit cinemas on December 24.
The debate has once again highlighted differing views within the film industry on what defines superstardom and whether the era of larger-than-life movie icons can continue in the age of digital entertainment and changing audience preferences.
