PMD Issues Nationwide Alert as Heavy Monsoon Rains Expected Across Pakistan Throughout the Week
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a nationwide weather alert, forecasting an intense spell of monsoon rains across most parts of the country from July 18 to July 25. The department has warned of possible flash floods, urban flooding, landslides, strong winds, and lightning-related damage, urging citizens and relevant authorities to take precautionary measures.
According to the PMD, moisture-laden monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the upper and central parts of Pakistan. In addition, a fresh westerly weather system is expected to enter the northern regions on Monday, likely intensifying rainfall activity across the country.
The weather department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall, with isolated areas expected to receive very heavy downpours in Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan, and northeastern Balochistan.

Rainfall is also expected in several districts of southern Punjab between July 20 and July 24. While most parts of Sindh are likely to remain hot and humid, scattered rain and thunderstorms are forecast in Tharparkar, Mithi, Sukkur, Larkana, Shikarpur, Dadu, and Jacobabad.
The PMD has warned of flash flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northeastern Punjab, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, and northeastern Balochistan during periods of heavy rainfall. Landslides may occur in the hilly areas of Murree, Galiyat, Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Furthermore, urban flooding is likely in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Multan, and Faisalabad between July 20 and July 23 if heavy rainfall persists.
The department has also cautioned that strong winds and lightning could damage vulnerable structures, including weak buildings, solar panels, electricity poles, and billboards.
During the next 24 hours, Isolated rain-wind/thunderstorm is expected over upper catchments of rivers Sutlej, Ravi and Chenab.

Citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather, while tourists are urged to exercise extra caution in mountainous areas. Farmers have been asked to plan agricultural activities according to weather conditions and ensure the safety of livestock.
The PMD has directed all relevant government agencies and disaster management authorities to remain on high alert and implement preventive measures to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety during the upcoming monsoon spell.
