Mint Offers Remarkable Health Benefits but May Not Suit Everyone, Experts Say

Islamabad: Health experts say that mint, a common kitchen herb, offers a wide range of health benefits, from improving digestion to supporting mental well-being and oral health, according to recent medical research.
Nutritionists say mint contains menthol, a natural compound that helps relax the muscles of the stomach and intestines, making it beneficial for digestive problems such as bloating, gas, abdominal cramps, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). A scientific review found that peppermint oil may help relieve IBS symptoms in some patients.
Experts also note that the aroma of peppermint oil may reduce stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue. A 2022 medical study reported that inhaling peppermint oil was associated with noticeable improvements in anxiety levels and mental strain among participants.
Mint also contributes to better oral hygiene. Chewing fresh mint leaves stimulates saliva production, while its antibacterial properties help reduce the bacteria responsible for bad breath and gum disease. Experts say it can be a healthier alternative to sugary breath mints.
Despite its benefits, health professionals caution that mint may not be suitable for everyone. People suffering from acid reflux, heartburn, or hiatal hernia are advised to avoid excessive consumption, as mint can relax the valve between the stomach and the esophagus, potentially worsening acid reflux symptoms.
Experts further recommend that individuals with gallbladder disorders consult their physician before using mint regularly.
While mint is generally considered safe as part of a balanced diet, medical professionals emphasize that it should not be regarded as a substitute for prescribed treatment or professional medical advice.
