Strict Security Measures in Place for Karachi’s Central 9th Muharram Procession

KARACHI: Extensive security arrangements have been finalized for the central 9th Muharram procession in Karachi, which will commence today from Nishtar Park amid heightened security measures.

According to officials, prominent religious scholar Allama Shehenshah Hussain Naqvi will address the main Majlis-e-Aza at Nishtar Park at 10:00 a.m. Following the gathering, the central procession will begin at 1:00 p.m. under the leadership of the Pak Haidari Scouts.

The procession will pass through its traditional route, including Shah Nawaz Bhutto Road, M.A. Jinnah Road, and Numaish Chowrangi, before concluding at Hussainia Iranian Imambargah in Kharadar.

During the procession, mourners will offer Zuhrain prayers in front of Ali Raza Imambargah on M.A. Jinnah Road.

A spokesperson for Karachi Police said that more than 5,000 police officers and personnel have been deployed to ensure security, while Rangers personnel will also assist in maintaining law and order. Special surveillance arrangements have been made along the procession route and surrounding areas.

Authorities have sealed streets and lanes connected to the procession route with containers, while markets and shops located along the route have been closed for three days as part of the security plan.

Under the security strategy, trained security personnel equipped with binoculars and modern weapons have been stationed on high-rise buildings overlooking the route. The Bomb Disposal Squad will conduct a comprehensive sweep before handing over the cleared route to the administration.

Meanwhile, additional traffic police personnel have been deployed at key locations to manage traffic flow and guide commuters toward alternative routes.

Officials have urged citizens to follow the traffic plan, avoid unnecessary travel during procession hours, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful observance of the occasion.
