Switzerland Defeat Canada 2-1 to Top Group B at FIFA World Cup 2026

VANCOUVER: Switzerland secured first place in Group B of the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a 2-1 victory over hosts Canada, strengthening their position ahead of the knockout stage.

The match, played in Vancouver, saw limited clear-cut chances during the first half, although Switzerland appeared to be the more threatening side. Swiss captain Granit Xhaka made his 149th international appearance, while Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau produced an excellent save to deny Breel Embolo.

The game was decided shortly after the restart. In the 46th minute, Ruben Vargas gave Switzerland the lead by converting a cross from Johan Manzambi.

Just 11 minutes later, Manzambi added his name to the scoresheet, finishing a well-worked move after excellent hold-up play from Embolo to double Switzerland’s advantage.

Canada attempted a comeback and pulled one goal back in the 76th minute through substitute Promise David, who scored just 76 seconds after coming onto the field following a slick team move. However, the hosts were unable to find an equalizer.

With the victory, Switzerland finished top of Group B and will now face one of the third-placed teams from Groups E, F, G, H, I, or J in the knockout stage on July 3 at the same stadium.

The result also earned Switzerland a notable achievement. They became only the third nation, after Argentina and France, to reach the first knockout round in four consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Despite the defeat, Canada made history by qualifying for the World Cup knockout stage for the first time ever.

The Canadians, who finished second in the group, will face the runners-up of Group A in Los Angeles on June 28. As a result of finishing second, Canada has also lost its home advantage and will play the remainder of the tournament in the United States.
