New Study Questions Long-Term Benefits of Antidepressants

ISLAMABAD: A new study has raised concerns about the long-term use of antidepressant medications, suggesting that their prolonged benefits may be more limited than previously believed while highlighting potential health risks and withdrawal-related challenges.

According to researchers, antidepressants are used by millions of people worldwide, with more than 330 million individuals estimated to be living with depression. The study noted that antidepressant use is nearly twice as common among women as it is among men.

In developed countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, many patients remain on antidepressant medication for years. However, emerging scientific evidence is challenging the long-held belief that these drugs primarily work by correcting a deficiency of serotonin in the brain.

Researchers said recent findings indicate that some traditional theories explaining the effectiveness of antidepressants may not fully reflect the complexity of how the medications work. As a result, renewed debate has emerged among medical experts regarding their long-term effectiveness.

The study also warned that individuals who have been taking antidepressants for extended periods may experience significant withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop the medication. In some cases, these symptoms can be more severe and longer-lasting than previously expected, making discontinuation difficult.

Medical experts emphasized that patients should never stop taking antidepressants abruptly or without consulting their healthcare provider, as doing so may lead to adverse health consequences.

In light of the findings, researchers recommended that healthcare professionals regularly review treatment plans for patients using antidepressants. They suggested that doctors reassess, at least every six months, whether continued antidepressant use remains necessary and beneficial for each patient.

Experts stressed that treatment decisions should be individualized and based on a careful evaluation of benefits and risks, with any changes to medication made under medical supervision.
