Dar Warns India Over Water Dispute, Says Using Water as Weapon Will Have Serious Consequences
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has warned that India is attempting to use water as a weapon, cautioning that such actions could lead to serious consequences.
Speaking in the National Assembly, Dar said the Indus Waters Treaty had been unilaterally suspended, adding that under international law, India is obligated to comply with the agreement.
He stated that the framework of the Indus Waters Treaty clearly outlines peaceful mechanisms for resolving disputes and that India’s recent actions in this regard are unlawful.
The deputy prime minister reiterated that while Pakistan remains committed to the United Nations Charter, attempts to deprive the Pakistani population of water would be met with serious repercussions.
Dar emphasized that Pakistan will continue to pursue a peaceful resolution of disputes, but will firmly protect its rights under international agreements.
