Petroleum Levy Challenged in Lahore High Court Over Fuel Pricing Structure

Lahore: A miscellaneous petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court challenging the imposition of heavy petroleum levies and the recent marginal reduction in petrol prices.

The petition was filed by Azhar Siddique, head of the Judicial Activism Panel, who argued that the government is charging a levy of Rs125 per litre on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel. The plea states that rising fuel costs are directly affecting farmers and the working class.

According to the petitioner, the recent reduction in petroleum prices has been minimal and does not provide meaningful relief to the public. He further contended that there is no transparent or proper mechanism governing fuel price adjustments in the country.

The petition has requested the court to restrain the government from collecting excessive petroleum levies and to direct the formulation of a clear and structured pricing mechanism for petroleum products, including adjustments in both increases and decreases.
