Nutrition Experts Reveal Which Fruit Juices Benefit Specific Health Conditions

ISLAMABAD: Nutrition experts have highlighted the health benefits and potential risks of various fruit juices, emphasizing that moderation is key despite their nutritional value.
According to renowned British nutritionist Rob Hobson, fruit juice can be part of a healthy diet if consumed responsibly. He recommends limiting intake to no more than 150 milliliters per day and drinking it with meals to prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.
Experts outlined the benefits and precautions associated with several popular fruit juices:
Pomegranate Juice – Heart Health and Cholesterol Control
Pomegranate juice is rich in powerful antioxidants known as polyphenols, which help protect arteries from damage and blockage. Research suggests that regular consumption may contribute to modest reductions in LDL (bad) cholesterol and blood pressure. Experts advise choosing 100 percent pure juice without added sugars or artificial ingredients.
Cranberry Juice – Preventing Urinary Tract Infections
Cranberry juice has been shown to help reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), particularly in women. Studies indicate it may lower the need for antibiotic treatment. However, health experts warn that people taking blood-thinning medications should avoid cranberry juice because of potentially dangerous interactions.
Orange Juice – Immunity and Bone Health
A single glass of orange juice can provide more than 100 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin C, which supports the immune system and helps the body absorb plant-based iron. Nutritionists recommend selecting orange juice with pulp for additional health benefits.
Cherry Juice – Better Sleep and Muscle Recovery
Tart cherry juice contains melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep patterns. Research suggests it may improve sleep duration and quality, particularly among individuals with insomnia. It is also popular among athletes for aiding muscle recovery and reducing soreness after exercise.
Beetroot Juice – Brain Function and Blood Pressure
Beetroot juice contains nitrates that help relax blood vessels, improving blood flow to the brain and supporting cognitive function, memory, and concentration. However, individuals with kidney disease, kidney stones, or those taking certain blood pressure medications are advised to consult a healthcare provider before consuming it regularly.
Apple Juice – Supporting Heart Health
Experts recommend cloudy or unfiltered apple juice over clear varieties because it retains more pulp and beneficial plant compounds. These nutrients may contribute to improved cardiovascular health.
Grapefruit Juice – Weight Management
Studies suggest grapefruit juice may assist with weight management, help lower body mass index (BMI), and improve levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, particularly among women.
However, experts strongly caution against consuming grapefruit juice while taking medications for blood pressure, cholesterol, depression, or sleep disorders. The juice can interfere with liver enzymes responsible for processing medications, potentially causing drug levels in the bloodstream to rise to dangerous levels.
Nutritionists concluded that while fruit juices can offer health benefits, they should be consumed in moderation and as part of a balanced diet rather than as a substitute for whole fruits.
