How to Preserve Sacrificial Meat for Several Weeks Without Spoiling

Islamabad (Khyber Report) With Eid-ul-Adha approaching, one of the most common concerns among people is how to preserve sacrificial meat for several weeks without spoilage.
Experts say this is not difficult if meat is stored properly, and in fact, it can be preserved for months and even up to a year using appropriate methods, with freezing being the most effective option.
Freezer Storage Method
Before placing meat in the freezer, it is important to divide it into small, properly packed portions. The meat should be protected from air exposure by using freezer-safe plastic bags or aluminum foil. If these are not available, airtight containers made of plastic or freezer-safe jars can also be used.
Removing bones as much as possible is recommended, as bones take up extra space and force the freezer to work harder. Using a freezer compartment in a refrigerator is also an option, though a separate deep freezer is more efficient.
How Long Meat Can Be Stored
Raw meat can be safely stored in a freezer for 4 to 12 months. Minced meat (keema) remains suitable for up to three months, while cooked meat can be preserved for 2 to 3 months.
Using a Water Cooler as an Alternative
In case a refrigerator or freezer is not available, a water cooler filled with ice can serve as a temporary storage solution. Meat should be placed on a layer of ice and then fully covered with more ice, ensuring continuous cooling. As the ice melts, it must be replaced regularly to maintain low temperature.
Preserving Meat with Salt
One of the oldest preservation methods involves using salt. Meat can be coated with curing salt and stored in an airtight container in a cool place for up to one month. Before cooking, excess salt should be washed off.
These simple methods can help ensure that sacrificial meat remains fresh and safe for consumption over an extended period.
