Trader receives extortion call of Rs 2.5 million in Karachi, case registered at Preedy police station

KARACHI: A trader involved in the electronics business has reportedly received an extortion call demanding Rs 2.5 million, prompting police to register a case at Preedy police station on the complaint of the victim.
According to details, with the approach of Eid-ul-Adha, extortionists have once again become active in the city. The case was registered under extortion-related sections on the complaint of trader Adnan.
The complainant stated that he runs an electronics business in a commercial building on Abdullah Haroon Road. On May 13, he received a WhatsApp call from an international number in which the caller claimed affiliation with the Lyari gang war network.
The caller allegedly demanded Rs 2.5 million as extortion money and threatened to kill the complainant and his brother if the payment was not made. The suspect also shared personal details of the trader and his family, including information about his shop timings and daily routine.
The complainant further said that he was warned against contacting the police, otherwise he and his family would be targeted, with the caller claiming that his “men were following him.”
Police officials confirmed that an FIR has been registered and the investigation has been transferred to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU). Further inquiries into the case are ongoing.
