Over Rs. 129 Tax on Petrol, Rs. 82 on Diesel per Liter Revealed in Pakistan

Islamabad: A significant portion of fuel prices in Pakistan consists of taxes, with reports revealing that Rs. 129.72 per liter on petrol and Rs. 82.81 per liter on diesel are being collected in taxes.
According to media reports citing sources from the Ministry of Energy, around 32% of the total price of petrol is made up of various taxes, meaning consumers are paying Rs. 129.72 per liter in taxes alone. This includes Rs. 103.50 as petroleum levy, Rs. 23.72 as customs duty, and Rs. 2.50 as climate support levy.
Similarly, diesel carries a tax component of 21%, with consumers paying Rs. 82.81 per liter in total taxes. The breakdown includes Rs. 51.62 as customs duty, Rs. 28.69 as petroleum levy, and Rs. 2.50 as climate support levy.
The report also highlights that the government continues to impose a climate support levy of Rs. 2.50 per liter on both petrol and diesel, aimed at generating funds to address climate change.
These figures indicate that alongside fluctuations in global oil prices, the high proportion of local levies and customs duties remains a major factor contributing to the increasing financial burden on consumers.
