PM Shehbaz Sharif Extends Transport Subsidy, Launches Housing Scheme for Low-Income Families

Islamabad (Khabar Daily) — Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced major relief measures for low-income groups, including a one-month extension in subsidies for motorcyclists, public transport, and goods transport amid rising petroleum prices and economic challenges.
According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the government has decided to continue last month’s subsidy to ease the financial burden on the public. The prime minister emphasized that despite difficult economic conditions, the government will continue to provide support through a multi-billion-rupee relief package and ensure strict monitoring to prevent unlawful fare increases.
In a separate development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also launched a major housing initiative titled the “Apna Ghar Program,” aimed at providing affordable housing to low- and middle-income families.
Under the scheme, individuals will be able to secure loans ranging from Rs 2.5 million to Rs 10 million for up to 20 years. The monthly installment for a Rs 2.5 million loan has been set at Rs 16,999, while Rs 5 million will require Rs 32,997 per month. Similarly, Rs 7.5 million loans will carry installments of Rs 49,497, and Rs 10 million loans will have monthly payments of Rs 65,996.
The program requires applicants to hold a valid national identity card and not be defaulters of any financial institution. Beneficiaries will be able to purchase plots of up to 10 marlas or ready-built houses, with 90 percent financing provided by the government and 10 percent to be contributed by the applicant.
The loans will be offered through Islamic and commercial banks, microfinance institutions, and the House Building Finance Company.
Officials say the initiative aims to provide housing opportunities to thousands of families while stimulating economic activity in the construction sector.
