Chinese Students Renting Smart Glasses to Cheat in Exams, Raising Concerns Over AI Misuse

China — A new and alarming trend has emerged in China, where students are reportedly renting smart glasses equipped with hidden cameras and artificial intelligence to cheat during exams.
According to reports, these devices are being rented through online marketplaces such as Xianyu for as little as **40 to 80 yuan per day** (approximately PKR 1,500 to 3,000), making them accessible to a wide number of students.
The smart glasses, powered by AI, are capable of capturing images, recording videos, analyzing surroundings, and even providing real-time answers. Students allegedly use them to scan exam papers, after which AI systems instantly generate answers—particularly for subjects like English and Mathematics—displayed on a tiny screen inside the glasses.
Experts warn that while such technology has practical applications, including navigation, translation, and presentations, its misuse in education poses a serious challenge to academic integrity.
A vendor based in Shenzhen claimed to have rented these devices to over **1,000 students within just four months**, highlighting the scale of the issue.
The glasses are designed to look like ordinary eyewear, making it difficult for exam invigilators to detect their use. They include concealed cameras, audio systems, and advanced AI models, allowing students to bypass traditional anti-cheating measures.
Meanwhile, the Chinese government is promoting domestic smart glasses brands such as Rokid and Quark through subsidy programs, while major companies like Xiaomi and Alibaba are also entering the smart glasses market alongside global players.
Education experts stress that examination systems must evolve to counter this “digital cheating” trend, warning that unchecked technological misuse could undermine merit-based evaluation.
Authorities are now under pressure to develop new strategies to prevent the growing use of AI-powered devices in exams and protect the credibility of the education system.
