OpenAI’s Head of Consumer Hardware Resigns Over Pentagon AI Deal

Caitlin Kalinoski, Head of Consumer Hardware at OpenAI, has resigned, citing concerns over the company’s agreement to deploy its AI technology on the US Department of Defense’s classified cloud networks.
In a post on the social media platform X, Kalinoski stated that OpenAI **did not adequately consider the implications** of the Pentagon deal before moving forward. She emphasized that while AI plays an important role in national security, applications such as **surveillance without judicial oversight and lethal autonomous systems** require careful deliberation.
Kalinoski noted that the deal was announced **before clear safety guidelines were established**, raising ethical and operational concerns.
According to Reuters, OpenAI clarified the day after the announcement that **additional safety measures** have been included to ensure the responsible use of its technology. The company stated that its AI **cannot be used for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapon systems**.
OpenAI added that it **respects differing opinions** on the matter and will continue dialogue with **employees, governments, civil society, and communities worldwide**.
Caitlin Kalinoski joined OpenAI in 2024, having previously led **augmented reality hardware development at Meta Platforms**. ⚠️🤖
