Power Distribution Companies Cause PKR 472 Billion Loss to National Treasury: NEPRA Report

Islamabad: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has released the performance report of power distribution companies (DISCOs) for the year 2024-25, revealing that these companies caused a loss of PKR 472 billion to the national treasury.

According to NEPRA’s report, the losses were incurred due to inefficiencies in power transmission, distribution, and low recovery of electricity bills. Out of the total losses, PKR 265 billion resulted from transmission and distribution inefficiencies, while PKR 207 billion was due to poor recovery of payments.

The report highlighted that DISCOs failed to meet their targets for minimizing transmission and distribution losses, describing these losses as a persistent challenge for the power sector. NEPRA also expressed concern over the low recovery of electricity bills, noting that such losses contribute to the growth of circular debt.
